This year, my kids are putting together a lent box. What you do is, find any box and have the kids put in their favorite toys, games, or whatever they’d like to sacrifice for lent.
A Lent Box for an older child might look something more like this:
Then, put on the lid and label it “Good-bye for Lent- See You at Easter!”.
Post continues after this brief information about the Catholic Icing Monthly Membership
Monthly Liturgical Membership
Find a place in a closet or on a high shelf where it’s out of sight. Don’t forget to bring it out for opening on Easter! 🙂
Also, I just love this sacrifice idea! Check out Karen in Mommyland’s Sacrifice Garland for holding everyone accountable. She also has a beautiful Mercy Cross craft that’s worth checking out!
Great idea. I wish I would have thought of this when our boys were little. I know they would have been thrilled to see their favorite toys again on Easter; and then would have been happy when they realized they did something worthwhile for Lent.
I LOVE the idea of the sacrifice box! What a fabulous idea – only since my son is 8, I'll leave it right out in the open so he can "miss" his toys. LACY YOU ROCK!! ~ Kathy
What a great idea! Have a Happy Mardi Gras and a blessed and holy Lent.
Why does the older kid box look like something I'd give up? LOL Are those my sacrifices?
The idea is a great one, by the way. Have a holy Lent, Lacy.
Thanks for the great ideas! I am going to use the box for my 2 boys. I did the sacrifice garland with my Religion classes today, it is a great visual!
I'm glad you like my Sacrifice Garland. My kids keep talking about it.
Great site! I've basically planned my Lent from your posts! 🙂 Thank you thank you! My 7 yo, 6 yo, and 3 yo are coloring their Lenten countdowns right this minute! 🙂

Hello, I just found your blog this past weekend and it's amazing! Your ideas and art are awesome! Thank you so much for sharing. I teach in a Catholic school and am using several of your ideas and links for Lent. Thank you again! God bless you!
What a wonderful idea! Love the sacrifice box!
Lacy, your site is very well done, full of treasures and easy to navigate! Bravo to you! We may do this Lent box, it's a great idea. And if we do we will put our Alleluia banner with it when we "bury the Alleluia" for Lent.
Are dads allowed to post here?
How would you explain to a 4-year-old the concept of sacrifice for its own sake, or sacrificing lower goods to focus on higher goods?
@Jeff, I know it’s very late, but I felt your post needed a reply. First, I for one LOVE seeing a dad on here. Second, here’s what I would tell my smart cookie 3 yo: When i give something up, it teaches me that it’s OK not to have everything i want as long as I have what i really, truly need (food, water, clothes). When we share, sometimes it makes us feel not-so-good, until we realize that we’ve made other people happy and it’s worth it. When we give something up, we teach ourselves that this feeling isn’t a bad feeling after all — it helps make us ready to share and give to others. In fact, when we sacrifice something, we’re really sharing that thing with Jesus to make Him happy!
Hi, just wanted to thank you for the sacrifice garland idea, just the right thing I was looking for,for my first communion kids here in Spain. Thanks for your efffort.
I’ve just discovered your blog and am loving it. I am a granny and quick to send ideas from here on to my children, hoping they will use . Keep it up. Our Church is blest that you care enough about our future to sacrifice your time to offer your ideas to others.
We did this with our boys this year. They gave up Legos (what a sacrifice!!)
