Papal Flag Idea for Kids

This week at our house is “P” week. P will be for prayer, priest, pope, papal flag, and St. Peter! The feast of the chair of St. Peter is coming up next week on February 22, so even for those of you not learning about the alphabet this should be a useful idea! 😉 As a learning activity to teach my kids about St. Peter and the Papal flag, we made this kid-appealing version:

As I’m sure you know, crossed keys are St. Peter’s most popular symbol, and you can find them on the papal flag. See?

We started by making a batch of my favorite soft pretzel dough (yes, I do bake sometimes, and I even use yeast. Lol!) and we rolled/stretched it into long coils to shape some simple keys.

When they were baked we just set out some simple yellow and white paper and put the keys on. Use this opportunity to talk to your kids about the history of the Papal Flag, and also where the Papal Flag got its colors! If I had some red yarn on hand, I would have wound it through the pretzels to look more like the flag, but I wasn’t going to make a special trip for it.

  1. Just a random thought, but red licorice twists or ropes would make a great edible red part 🙂

Thanks for the continual stream of inspiring ideas!

Oh, I was reading your post and as my youngest daughter says, "My tummy wants more!" Great post and very creative for us types that are still learning our way around the kitchen.
