The month of September is dedicated to the 7 Sorrows of Mary, and September 15 is the Feast day of Our Lady of Sorrows. You can find all of my ideas about how to teach your kids about Our Lady Of Sorrows here, and today we are going to be crafting a 7 sorrows of Mary mobile with kids.
If you’ve never heard of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, here they are:
- Prophecy of Simeon
- The Flight to Egypt
- Loss of Jesus in the Temple
- Mary meets Jesus on the Road to Calvary
- Jesus dies on the cross
- Mary receives the Body of Jesus
- Jesus is placed in the Tomb
As a mother, I have trouble putting myself in her shoes. These truly were sad burdens for Mary to bear, and it is said that each of these sorrows pierced Mary’s heart like a sword. That is why Our Lady of Sorrows is commonly depicted with 7 swords in her heart. I felt inspired to create a craft for the Seven Sorrows of Mary. Here it is:
This craft is unbelievably easy to put together, and a great reminder to hang in your home. The heart represents the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and each of Mary’s sorrows is on a separate tear drop- 7 total. It seems that I’ve taken a shine to mobile crafts lately, but you know what? I like them! The kids are proud of them, they stay around the house, and we continue to learn from them and are reminded by them to pray.
Supplies Needed:
- Free Seven Sorrows Craft Download
- Card stock (we used pink and blue)
- Scissors
- Box Cutter (exact-o-knife)
- Tape
- Yarn or string (we used blue)
- Single hole punch
Start by printing the download. We printed the heart on pink card stock, and the teardrops on blue card stock.
Using scissors, cut out the heart and 7 teardrops. Then, using an exact-o-knife, cut just the black lines in the heart. (This is a job for an adult)
When the black lines are cut, the heart will look like this:
When you gently twist the card stock, it makes the heart twirly.
Next, tape pieces of yarn to the end of each teardrop.
Post continues after this brief information about the Catholic Icing Monthly Membership
Monthly Liturgical Membership
Then, tape the other side to the heart. We hung the tear drops off all sides of our twirly heart, and one teardrop right from the bottom. Punch a hole at the top, and tie on a loop with yarn.
I absolutely love the final craft, and it’s so fast and easy to make! This craft is age-appropriate for any child who can use a pair of scissors!
The Hail Mary prayer is provided in the middle of the heart to remind us to pray 7 Hail Marys each day- one for each of Mary’s sorrows. Mary relayed to St. Bridget that 7 graces would be granted to those who pray 7 Hail Marys daily and meditate on her tears and dolors (sorrows):
“I will grant peace to their families.”
“They will be enlightened about the divine Mysteries.”
“I will console them in their pains and will accompany them in their work.”
“I will give them as much as they ask for as long as it does not oppose the adorable will of my divine Son or the sanctification of their souls.”
“I will defend them in their spiritual battles with the infernal enemy and I will protect them at every instant of their lives.”
“I will visibly help them at the moment of their death– they will see the face of their mother.”
“I have obtained this grace from my divine Son, that those who propagate this devotion to my tears and dolors will be taken directly from this earthly life to eternal happiness, since all their sins will be forgiven and my Son will be their eternal consolation and joy.”
Those are some pretty awesome promises! May this craft hang in your home as a reminder to say your 7 Hail Mary prayers each day!
If you have a child who can’t read, you might also want to print this coloring page of the 7 Sorrows of Mary for them to color. It’s a great resource.

Hi Lacy.
I just adore this project! I can’t wait to make it and be reminded about the suffering Jesus and Mary endured for the salvation of our souls. I first learned about Mary’s Seven Sorrows by reading “Left to Tell”. It is the story about the horrific tragedy Immaculee Ilibagiza experienced while losing her family and neighbors during the Rwandan Genocide. It is also the story about her courageous heart and the joy she found while fighting the temptation to hate by accepting the love and mercy of Jesus Christ. The description of the Seven Sorrows and accompanying prayers on her site are so heart piercing that I will never be the same. My love for Jesus and Mary have deepened so much that it has truly transformed my heart.
Thank you for making such a lovely creation!
Kind Regards,
Gina
