Yes Lord Craft for CCD or Sunday School

Catholic ABC’s Week: 29
Letter of the week: Y
Theme: Saying Yes to God!
Saint of the Week: St. Yolanda
Craft: ‘Yes Lord’ thumbs up craft

I am nearing the end of the alphabet with the letter “Y”. I can’t believe I’m almost finished! :-) Y was a harder letter to “craft” than I thought it would be, but I’m very happy with this “Yes, Lord” craft I came up with. I was first introduced to the “Yes, Lord” song as a high school youth conference, so it always makes me smile.

This is a very simple craft to make. Just have your child trace their hand, and help them cut it out if necessary. Fold the fingers back to glue it into a thumbs up “Yes”, and add a cross. Write “Yes, Lord” with a marker, and tape a string or pipe cleaner on the back to make it into a hang-able ornament.

Here’s another variation I made that includes the
sign language “L” for Lord as well.
Just be sure that when you trace your hand the thumb
is sticking up nice and high! :-)
Grab Bag Ideas for the Letter Y: (be sure to check out the Classroom Script
for directions on using the grab bag.) anything yellow, boat (for yacht), yard sale sign, yard stick, yarn, yearbook, yeast package, yield sign, yo-yo.

Saint Xavier Spoon Craft

Catholic ABC’s Week: 28
Letter of the week: X
Theme: St. Xavier
Saint of the Week: St. Xavier
Craft: Spoon Saint Xavier

You can get wooden craft spoons at your local craft store. These are simple to make, and a lot of fun!
How to Make a St. Xavier Spoon Saint
Start with a wooden craft spoon. Have the kids use markers to add a face and hair- googly eyes are fun for this project! Cut the clothes out of black construction paper and attach with glue. You can cut little ovals for hands out of construction paper or a manila file folder. Tie a little piece of twine, embroidery floss, or yarn around his waist, and give him a pipe cleaner cross. (Better yet, salvage a little crucifix from an old broken rosary.) We finished off this craft with an “X” sticker from our foam alphabet stickers.

We watched
Francis Xavier and the Samurai’s Lost Treasure DVD
which was a lot of fun! This is a cute movie, and full of adventure (read- great for little boys!). Some of the movies made by this company (CCC of America) are a little scary for small kids, and I don’t love all of them, but this one I recommend without reservations. While these movies aren’t “Disney quality”, they are pretty good. If you don’t want to buy it without seeing it first, you can rent it from Pius Media, and coupon code BVM1 will give 50% off your first month’s subscription with them. Yay!! :-)

In this movie, St. Francis Xavier saves a child from a tiger, deters pirates, and is protected by God from a pit of hungry alligators! The black pom pom ball is our “black pearl”. This was a really fun movie to make crafts for! So we made a spoon craft alligator, tiger, and pirate as well!

Tiger Spoon Craft
Color with orange marker, add face with black marker, cut out construction paper ears with black marker details, and wind with a piece of black embroidery foss for the stripes.

Alligator Spoon Craft
Color spoon green with marker, and glue on googly eyes. Use zig zag scissors to cut out teeth and stripes, then attach with glue.

Pirate Spoon Craft
Draw on beard with a brown marker, then add googly eyes. fold a hat using black construction paper, and glue on his head. Use a red marker to add stripes to his shirt.

We were really into this one (my kids being excited about the movie and all) so then we crafted an alligator out of a clothes pin. This was really fun! We colored him with a marker, and used 2 sideways green pony beads to hold the googly eyes on top of his head. Again with the zig zag scissors for his teeth, and we folded some construction paper accordion style to glue on his back. You can make the alligator open and close his mouth by pinching the clothes pin, but God protects St. Francis Xavier from being attacked! ;-)
Have fun learning about St. Xavier and the letter X! :-)

Grab Bag Ideas for the Letter X: (be sure to check out the Classroom Script
for directions on using the grab bag.) picture of an X-ray, Xylophone, foX, boX, crucifiX, waX, the number siX, plastic aX, toolboX.

He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands Craft

Catholic ABC’s Week: 27
Letter of the week: W w
Theme: World
Saint of the Week: St. William
Craft: He’s got the Whole World in His Hands!

This lesson starts with singing! Sing He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands with your kids, and talk to them about it! Don’t forget the hand motions! ;-) This craft is super easy to make, and I’m willing to bet you have all the supplies you need already.
Materials needed to complete this craft:
  • Blue and Green Markers
  • Coffee Filters
  • Glue Stick
  • Paper
  • Paint

Start by having your kids color 1 coffee filter each randomly with blue and green markers. Keep reminding them to “color where it’s white”. Otherwise they’ll just keep coloring in one spot until they make a hold in the coffee filter.

This is the one I colored:
When you’re finished coloring, lay them out on some newspaper and sprinkle them with some water. Less is more here- you just want enough water to make the colors spread. If you really drench it all the marker will wash off and leave it white. My kids and I flicked the water on with a toothbrush.
When it dries, it will have a great marbled look to it.
If you’re impatient, you can speed the process with a hair dryer.

Use a glue stick to attach to construction paper, and stamp
their hands on it with some paint.
He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands!
I just love how these came out! The results are great! Even the white parts just look like clouds. This would also be a great craft for Earth Day.
Variations

In the classroom, you can glue them to black paper, and let the kids decorate them with cheapo foil star stickers. To avoid the mess of paint, just trace around their hands with white crayons! (A mom from our preschool class thought of using white crayons. Great idea, huh?)
I originally wanted to cut out handprints, but honestly, that would be a LOT of cutting for a whole preschool class. However, if the kids you’re working with are old enough to do their own cutting, of if you’re only doing this for a few kids, it is cute:
If you don’t glue it down to anything, it makes a great sun catcher!
Here’s one where I folded the fingers to “hold” the world:
It also makes a great world sun catcher.

Grab Bag Ideas for the Letter W: (be sure to check out the Classroom Script
for directions on using the grab bag.) world, wax, wolf, whale, wheel, whipped cream container, whiskers, whistle, whiteout, window, wig, wind chimes, windsock, plastic wine glass, wings, wizard, wood, wrapping paper, water color paints, water gun, walkie talkie, wallet, walnut, wand.

Mary Craft for May Crownings

Catholic ABC’s Week: 26

Letter of the week: V

Theme: Virgin Mary

Saint of the Week: St. Veronica

Craft: May Crowning Craft

It’s been awhile since I’ve had a Preschool curriculum post, but I had to take some time off for Easter. I can only handle so much at once! ;-) We’re getting close to the end of the alphabet, and that means coming up with stuff for the “weird letters”, which I have been putting off. I’ll admit that I would have rather done “Vestments” or “Vatican” for the letter V, but our preschool co-op has been doing “Virgin Mary” for years and this craft was designed by Denise who used to teach my class before me.

Supplies needed to Complete this Craft:

Printed out picture of Mary

Fun foam

Scissors

Sharpie Marker

Foam Stickers (optional)

Fake flowers on wire (look in the wedding section of your craft store)

Cut your foam sheets into a long rectangle with a hole for a door knob. You can actually buy pre-made door hanger foam things from the Dollar Tree 3 for $1 if you’d rather not cut them yourself. Print out Mary pictures for the kids, and trace around the outside with a sharpie. (This gives them a good line to cut on). Have them cut and glue Mary onto the foam, then take the wire flowers and poke them through the foam around Mary’s head to crown her with flowers. Decorate with additional foam stickers, and write “Virgin Mary” on with a sharpie.

This is a craft that won’t crowd your refrigerator, or your counter space because when kids are done with these, they can hang them on their door and always have Mary around!

Grab Bag Ideas for the Letter V: (be sure to check out the Classroom Script
for directions on using the grab bag.) St. Veronica holy card, violet, velvet, toy van, vanilla, vegetables, vitamins, valentine, vaseline, picture of Vatican City, veil, vest.
