Recently, Lydia has been having a ton of fun making her own pom pom balls and making them into little fun, furry creatures! It all started when I got this book for her, and the pom pom fun hasn’t stopped! Turns out, these little furry friends are a pretty great match with our Saint peg dolls. 🙂

There’s St. Francis with the wolf- pretty cute, huh? Btw, this St. Francis is a part of my printable peg dolls where you just paint the head and then Mod Podge on the body- you can find him here.
The pom pom creatures feel like a good fit with the peg dolls because they are also homemade and one-of-a-kind. Lydia has enjoyed making them so much!
Off the top of my head, there are plenty of Saint stories that include animals, and also animal symbols that go with Saints:
- St. Francis~ wolf, fish, birds… pretty much any animal
- St. Gerome~ lion
- St. George~ dragon
- St. Benedict~ raven
- St. John~ eagel
- St. Mark~ lion
- St. Luke~ ox
- St. Therese (as a girl)~ dog
- St. John Bosco~ dog
- St. Philip Neri~ cat
- St. Brigid~ pig
- St. Patrick~ snake
- St. Lazarus the Beggar~ dog
- St. Anthony~ fish
- Good Shepherd~ sheep
- St. Paul~ horse
- St. Martin de Porres~ mouse
- St. Peter~ rooster
- St. Gertrude~ cat
- St. Rocco~ dog
- St. Corbinian~ bear
- St. Felix~ spider
- St. Kateri~ turtle
- St. Blaise~ patron of wild animals
- St. Hubert~ deer
- Mary & Joseph~ donkey
- St. John The Baptist~ grasshopper
- St. Ambrose~ bees
- St. Isidore~ farm animals
- St. Agnes~ lamb
- St. Dominic~ hound
- St. Martin of Tours~ horse
- St. William of Monte Vergine~ wolf
I’m sure there are plenty more Saint stories and symbols that include animals! In fact, a Holy Spirit dove could probably go with pretty much any Saint. 😉 (side note- I really couldn’t find a list like this online, but the more I thought, the more came to me! Please share in the comments if you know more and I will add them to the list.)
It could also be cute to utilize this furry little craft when learning about God’s creation in general. Lydia has had such a great time with these!
So normally I’m all about looking up how to do things online, and acquiring my own materials… but when I saw this Mini Pom Pom Pets book by Klutz, I thought, “I bet Lydia would love that!” And she did. 🙂
I loved having the book/kit because Lydia was able to read the directions and make these all on her own.

When she used up all the supplies that came with the kit, I replaced them with regular yarn. The book also came with paper ears etc. to go on the animals, and she just used the paper that she punched them out from to trace and cut out more of her own- so it’s been the craft kit that keeps on giving.
Even I had fun with these! We’ve been focusing on A. A. Milne as our author this semester (we have the one giant book with ALL the stories and poems together), so I joined in and made these cute little guys! 🙂
Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, and Tigger pom pom animal craft
All the rest of them are 100% Lydia made. The other kids don’t seem ready to make these yet- especially since you make your own pom pom balls. Lydia is 9, and it seems perfect for her age and up.
As long as we were at it, we also had some fun with yarn dolls. Lots and lots of yarn dolls…
Anyone want some yarn dolls or animals? 😉
What have you been having fun crafting? Anything to go with your Saint peg dolls? Know anymore animals that go with Saints? Share in the comments.
Lacy,
Your family is just precious!

Hi Lacy! I jumped into the world of peg dolls this week and am already hooked! I was wondering what you use to seal your dolls? My boys are 4 and 2 and at first, I wasn’t going to seal them, but after one afternoon of playing, you could already see a couple of small scuffs. Which seal is the best/safest to use on the dolls that will be played with?
I use Mod Podge but you can also use a spray sealer. Some spray sealers will dissolve sharpie markers, so be careful if you’ve used sharpies! Mod Podge will NOT smear sharpies.
Thank you! 🙂
St. William of Monte Vergine has a wolf. Great ideas!
I love this post. St. Melangell of Wales protected hares. St. Kevin of Glendalough let a blackbird build a nest in his hands. St. Cuthbert of Lindisfarne prayed while standing in the North Sea. Some otters came to warm his feet. St. Columba welcomed a tired crane. St. Helen/Helena of Constantinople brought cats to Cyprus to drive away snakes that had invaded churches there.
