This paint is just made from just shaving cream, glue, and food color! (The full recipe for shaving cream puffy paint and directions can be found at the bottom of this post.)
Pro Tip! I fully suggest using card stock rather than regular paper with this paint because it’s a heavier paint.
I like to mix this paint in disposable bowls to keep from having the clean them out. I’m absolutely certain it’s not a good idea to put wet glue down your drain. I also mix the paint with plastic spoons. In fact, the kids love to do this step themselves as part of the fun!
This paint is going to have a thick texture, similar to whipped cream. You can make as many colors as you want! We made just one color for the craft we made with this shaving cream paint recipe. I had the kids spread it on their papers with a popsicle stick.
I was making a “Jesus Walks On Water Craft” with my preschool class (you can find that full craft here) because I wanted a paint that would emulate water and also work as a glue. This paint was perfect!

However you leave the paint, that’s how it will dry, peaks and all! It’s very fluffy! Here are some ideas of things that would be super cool to paint with this shaving cream paint recipe:
- water
- cotton candy
- whipped cream or cakes (think a dollop of this stuff on top of a cute piece of paper pumpkin pie!)
- a beard or hair (like Santa hair)
- clouds
- snow
- fluffy animals (like sheep or poodles)
You can also color on your paper first with markers and just use the shaving cream puff paint as an accent. I love finding creative ways to use these homemade paints that fit with the medium.
Shaving Cream Puffy Paint Recipe
Ingredients needed for the paint:
- Shaving cream
- White school glue
- Food color
- (I highly recommend using food color pastes– a great investment because the colors are a lot more vibrant than what you get from typical food coloring! Also, the bottles of gel food coloring last a super long time.)
Other supplies needed:
- card stock or paper
- disposable bowls
- disposable spoons
- popsicle sticks
How To Mix And Use Shaving Cream Puff Paint
- Mix the shaving cream and glue in equal parts.
- Divide into separate bowls (one bowl for each color you wish to mix).
- Mix in your food coloring, start small if you’re using the gels as they go a long way! Stir thoroughly.
- Spread onto your card stock with a popsicle stick.
However you leave the paint, it will dry that way, texture and all! For this paint, allow it to dry overnight. The texture is amazing on this when you’re finished. You’re going to love this paint recipe!
Alternately you can put the shaving cream paint into bags (like you would icing) and “pipe” it onto your paper. This is also fun, but with small kids, I found that q tips was a lot easier to mange.
