The month of September is dedicated to Our Lady Of Sorrows, so this is the perfect month to teach kids all about this special Catholic devotion. I am going to run you through everything you need to know to teach kids, and also observe the feast of Our Lady Of Sorrows on September 15. I also have links I’m going to share to coloring pages, crafts, recipes, and more! So let’s take a look at teaching kids about Our Lady Of Sorrows.
7 Sorrows Of Mary Cheat Sheet
These are 7 sorrows that Mary endured during her life on earth. Here’s the complete list.
- Prophecy of Simeon
- The Flight to Egypt
- Loss of Jesus in the Temple
- Mary meets Jesus on Road to Calvary
- Jesus dies on the cross
- Mary receives the Body of Jesus
- Jesus is placed in the Tomb
Do These Match The Sorrowful Mysteries Of The Rosary?
No, they’re s different set of lists, however there is some overlap. Jesus carrying the cross and the crucifixion of Jesus are both sorrowful mysteries of the rosary AND 2 of the Sorrows of Mary.
Praying the sorrowful mysteries of the Rosary would be a great way to observe the dedication of Our Lady Of Sorrows!
Symbol Of Mary’s Sorrowful Heart
I studied Art for years in college and I love the symbolism behind religious art! Sometimes Mary’s sorrowful heart is confused with the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and while they are similar, they aren’t the same.
Both the Immaculate Heart and the Sorrowful Heart of Mary are symbolized with swords because of Simeon’s prophecy in Luke 2: 34-35.
“Simeon blessed themand said to Mary, his mother, ‘This child is chosen by God for the destruction and salvation of many in Israel. He will be a sign from God which many people will speak against and so reveal their secret thoughts. And sorrow, like a sharp sword, will break your own heart.'”
The main difference between the 2 is that the Immaculate Heart of Mary is depicted with 1 sword, and the Sorrowful Heart Of Mary is depicted with 7 swords piercing Mary’s heart.
When To Celebrate The Sorrowful Heart Devotion
The entire month of September is dedicated to Our Lady Of Sorrows for Catholics, so this is a great month to focus on that devotion. The specific feast day is September 15, so if you’re going to choose one day to go all out, I would say that’s it.

Celebrating a feast day with food is always fun and memorable! Any of your favorite recipes that are in the shapes of hearts, especially if you can include plastic cocktail swords, would be perfect! If you don’t have plastic cocktail swords, go raid your kid’s toy bucket and grab his action figure swords. Just wash them off before sticking them in your food haha.
